Choosing Capitol Was Easy.

In September of 2014, I moved to Omaha from a beach town in North Carolina.

Having attended a Cosmetology school before the move, I came to Nebraska with only 1500 hours of education. The North Carolina requirements were 600 hours short of the 2100 hours needed to practice Cosmetology in Nebraska. This meant that I needed to go back to school.

Choosing Capitol was easy for a couple reasons.

When I spoke to Skylar McCaig in Admissions, he was very informative and understanding of my situation. He helped me figure out what I needed to do to transfer as seamlessly as possible.

Compared to the school I attended previously, Capitol goes above and beyond. The stigma of a Cosmetology school is that they will teach you just enough to pass your state boards. Capitol teaches so much more than the bare minimum. Since Nebraska only requires a written test to pass boards, the school is able to provide a curriculum that trains and pushes students to become a successful, salon-ready stylist. Students are set up to build a strong career.

I’ve only been a student here for a few weeks and I’ve found that the instructors are very detail oriented in their teaching style. Body position as well as hand and finger placement are just some of the things I have learned that are so important. We work so much with our whole body that being taught all the proper positioning and techniques will keep us working in this industry for a long time.

The instructors are wonderful about giving compliments and I feel that they are also very good at corrective instruction. If you have technical challenges, they will simply work with you one on one until you feel confident and fully understand the task.

In North Carolina, I only had one teacher the whole time I was in school. Capitol has educators for every topic and discipline. One for learning hot implements, two for hair cutting, two for hair color, etc.. I feel that all the instructors are very well informed and teach us in their own creative and unique ways.

One of the most amazing things that I have discovered is, that we don’t do class work out of a textbook. We have textbooks for reference material, but Capitol has created their own curriculum. With the use of individually created visuals, practical explanations and hands on demonstrations, all types of learning styles can easily absorb the material. The staff uses real life scenarios and experiences, which take the learning environment to an entirely different level.

Even though I will only be attending Capitol for 900 hours, I am thoroughly excited to learn what I can during that this time. And I have to say, I am a little jealous of all of my classmates who will be attending through the entire 2100 hours.
